From the If I Ruled the World Collection,
When I created this, I was surrounded by loss. Family members gone, finances out of reach, and a constant feeling of what I didn’t have. But I refused to let that define me. This child holding the Earth? That’s me reclaiming my world. The blocks spell “blessed” because, as a people, I believe our uniqueness and power are always present. Whether others admit it or not.
The vivid green background, I wanted it to symbolize growth; that we always rise. The child’s orange shirt is creativity, to spark imagination. It’s our power to create even when we start with nothing. The Earth’s blues and whites, with water spilling over his fingers, show that this isn’t abstract, it’s real. We can hold our world if we claim it. The blocks spelling “blessed” in bright colors are the joy and uniqueness we have as a community. I painted this to remind myself and anyone who sees it: no matter the loss, I’m blessed. I control my joy. This painting is my declaration: even in loss, I’m blessed. I control my joy, my world, my growth and I hope this child reminds us all that we can, too.
